Don Jorge Ovalle is a 3rd generation farmer, who has been responsible for his family’s farm, which was established in 1960. His genuine, straightforward reason for farming coffee is simply for the love of it.
Interestingly this coffee has been called “La Democracia” because that is how he introduced his farm. As you will see the name of the farm is different. With a historical past of being run by military dictatorship, many hope that Guatemala will be free of corruption and run by a real democracy someday.
About the Region
With altitudes over 2,000 meters, Huehuetenango is the highest and driest region of Guatemala. It is only one of three regions without volcanic soil. The hot winds from the Mexican mountains has historically protected the region from frost. As always with nature there are exceptions and in 2014 farmers faced an unexpected frost in January killing over a million plants and impacting the harvest. Huehue is one of the more remote parts of the country and accessibility by roads has been dif?cult. In the past many farmers used Ox or have personally moved coffee by their own feet. Huehuetenango enjoys easy access to many water sources enabling many producers to process their own coffee.
