Skittles, Black Cherry, Chocolate, Lime, Stone Fruits.

We are big fans of coffees from the Sasaba washing station in Ethiopia. One of the main components of the Climpson Estate blend is from here. This time we have found a delicious, fresh crop unwashed coffee.

The Sasaba Washing Station is located in the Oromia State in the Guji District. Access is a challenge – the road being too rough for Land Cruisers, so the next best option is to access by Soviet-Era Kamas trucks with 6-wheel drive to reach the washing station. The washing station is productive and run well. Tsegaye, the owner of the washing station, is open to a feedback loop between producer and end user’s, creating the potential for exemplary coffees and higher premiums for the farmers.

At Sasaba washing station, the red cherries are produced in the area surrounding the washing station and are collected from late September until December. The natural coffees are usually dried for 15-20 days. The smallholder farmers that sell their cherries to Sasaba washing station (the exact number of farmers selling their coffee to Sasaba is not known) usually own around 10-15 coffee trees. Besides coffee they grow subsistence crops like maize, surgum-eans and peas.
