Avenue Coffee - Thiriku AB (Kenya)

A smooth cup with a creamy mouthfeel. Fruity notes of blackcurrants, lots of sweetness and subtle maple taste.

In 2002, the Thiriku Farmers Co-op Society was founded, and in the 13 years since has grown to 2300 members. Each member averages 200 coffee trees, which grow alongside tea, macadamia nuts, beans, bananas and maize.

The incredible flavours found in each cup of this coffee are a product of the fertile red volcanic soils of the Nyeri region. Smallholders of this Co-op have access to training and technical advice, as well as advances for farm inputs and school fees.

The coffee bean varietals, SL28 and SL34 are products of the 1930’s when botanists searched for different mutations of Bourbon and Typica beans. They hoped to find high quality, disease resistant strains that had high yields. Characteristics of the SL28 varietal tend to be fantastic sweetness, balance and complexity lead by an intense citric acidity. SL34 is known to be fairly resistant to heavy rainfall at high altitudes and produces top quality coffee with complex citrus acidity and a heavy mouthfeel.
