From Avenue Coffee:
One of our very favourite coffees from last year is back – and dare we say it – even better!
Smallholders based around the Rocko Mountain in the Hachida Woreda, Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia have produced this phenomenal coffee. It is a fine example of a Yirgacheffe coffee – wonderful florals and profound citrus flavours. It was one of our favourites last year and, dare we say it, it’s even better this year.
Since 2008 coffee in Ethiopia has been moved through the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) which was established to create a new market place which served the needs of all those involved in the coffee supply chain. Before that the risk and high costs of trading meant that only a third of all agricultural products produced in Ethiopia reached the open market. With no guarantee of quality in the products, buyers would previously only trade with suppliers they knew and trusted. The result of this meant that agricultural producers would become isolated from the market which would force them to sell their produce to the nearest buyer and reduce their ability to negotiate on price. 90% of all coffee produced in Ethiopia mow moves through the ECX, where it is cupped and graded according to flavour profile and quality
This year one of our green coffee suppliers, Falcon, have decided to include a donation to the non-profit organisation ‘Girls Gotta Run Foundation’ which aims to empower young women in Ethiopia through running and education to avoid early marriage and pregnancy.
