From Artisan Roast:

The stunning, soaring peaks of Northern Peru seem to go on endlessly into the high Andean cordillera. Many of these peaks fan out upwards from the town of Jaen, a central hub for the Cajamarca region.

Jaen may sit low in altitude but within a 30-minute drive the high-altitude breathlessness of the Andes is accessible.

Here, small, family orientated coffee producers, blessed with perfect growing conditions and traditional cultivars, yet often unable to gain the visibility that their coffee so richly deserves. Of these producers Damien Garcia leapt to fame a couple of years ago when his washed process coffee finished second in the second ever Cup of Excellence Peruvian competition.

Results like this afford the ability to experiment and were delighted to be able to showcase a fruit forward natural process coffee from Damien. He fermented this micro-lot for an extended 70 hours in a tiled tank before cold washing it. Fermentation times like this were unheard of a few years ago and can deliver a distinct fruit like juiciness and vibrant flavour profile

This juicy fruit like sweetness sets a perfect base on which the flavours can express themselves. A bold red cherry flavour is the most distinct, and this combines with further flavours of red grapefruit citrus, and ripe melon. Hints of florals and cardamon are more present as the coffee cools and a pleasing cacao nib finish adds balance to the fruitiness.

The roast is light to preserve this vibrant gem of a coffee, favouring filter and immersion brewing as a result.
