Bolivia (tags: BrowseMenu, Country, Origin, South America) : boliviaUpdated: Sun 17 May 2020 TITLE: Coffee from Bolivia
META: Discover the best Bolivian coffees from our range of artisan roasters. Bolivian coffee is known for offering a clean and sweet taste, with hints of caramel and chocolate. Bolivia is a country with enormous potential to become a world class speciality coffee producing country. It’s climate, altitude and fertile land make it a perfect place to grow coffee, however the overall export of coffee is declining every year. With the economy struggling and the price for coffee unable to out-do that of coca, farmers aren’t to blame for exchanging their crop. However, in recent years external funding has brought new washing stations to the country alongside incentives for farmers to grow higher quality coffee like the introduction of the cup of excellence. The traceability of Bolivian coffee is very good, and most coffees can be traced right the way back to the individual farm or cooperative. This makes for some unique coffees. Predominantly clean in the cup they sometimes struggle to obtain sharp acidity but have a wonderful sweet-toned finish and overall balanced. |

Brazil| Brazilian (tags: BrowseMenu, Country, Origin, South America) : brazilUpdated: Sun 17 May 2020 TITLE: Brazilian coffee
META: Brazilian coffee. 9 coffees available online and sent fresh, directly from the roasters. Brazil is the world's biggest coffee producing country and has had that title for 150 years. It’s climate, land mass, population and ease of export all lead to the coffee producing giant that today grows one third of the overall coffee world wide. Coffee in Brazil is far more than a crop or a drink, it is deeply entwined in its culture and history. It has also historically played a huge role in international markets and during the great depression of the 1930’s Brazil was producing 80% of the worlds coffee and ended up burning 78 million bags of stockpiled coffee in an effort to invigorate coffee prices. The Brazilian coffee industry today is around 3.5 million people strong and has around 220,000 coffee farms of various sizes. While you can find many small holder farms in Brazil, the country was the first and still leads the way in industrialised coffee production. While in the majority of the coffee growing countries of the world, the coffee cherry is picked by hand, in Brazil the large farms operate huge machinery to pick the coffee. The benefit of this is the massive quantities of coffee that can be harvested at once (the machines shake the cherries loose from the branches. This leads on to the downside of this technique which is, all of the cherries are harvested at once whether ripe or not. Although processing the coffee in certain ways can separate the ripe coffee, the invasive nature of the harvest coupled with the relatively low altitude of many Brazilin farms compromise on the overall flavour. High quality coffee can be traced back to the exact coffee farm however considering the size of certain farms and the amount of coffee they produce it isn’t always the same quality as other countries. Typically, Brazilian coffee is found in espresso blends across the world. This is because of it’s low acidity, sweet nutty flavour and chocolatey notes as well as it’s fairly low price point. This is true for many Brazilian coffees, however there is a small percentage of unique and interesting coffees that make it out of Brazil and due to the multitude of Brazilian coffee a small percentage is actually quite a lot. |

Burundi (tags: Africa, BrowseMenu, Country, Origin) : burundiUpdated: Sun 17 May 2020 TITLE: Coffee from Burundi
META: Discover our range of roasted coffees from Burundi. Grown in rich volcanic soils, coffee here is delicate, clean tasting with a full body and hint of acidity. Located in Central Africa, Burundi’s mountainous geography and favourable climate are two of the reasons why it is one of the most highly sought after coffee’s in the world. Burundi is now experiencing a resurgence in the growing of coffee after years of civil war and conflict and has nearly started producing as much coffee as it was in its heyday. The most common varietal in the country is Bourbon while others are also available. There are now many new farms across Burundi that have embraced speciality coffee and trade directly with roasters and buyers, which is a new thing in this country. Until 2008 all the coffee that left the country did so through the same washing systems making it very hard to trace the origin. Typical taste profiles of Burundi coffee include berry and bright, juicy notes, it normally has very balanced acidity and mouthfeel and is a classic easy sipper. Unlike other East Africans, a Burundi coffee doesn’t typically have any crazy flavour profiles but always is often seen as an all-rounder. |

Colombia| Colombian (tags: BrowseMenu, Country, Origin, South America) : colombiaUpdated: Sun 17 May 2020 TITLE: Colombian coffee
META: Colombian coffee. 12 coffees available online and sent fresh, directly from the roasters. Probably the most well marketed coffee growing country in the world, Colombian coffee has always been one of the most sought after. Thanks to advertising campaigns in the US in the 50’s and 60’s, Colombian coffee has since then been recognised as quality coffee. Nowadays Colombia is the third largest coffee growing region in the World with over 2 million Colombians working in the industry. Unlike its neighbour to the East, Colombia has many smallholder coffee farmers, with 60% of Colombian coffee farmers cultivating land of less than 1 hectare. This obviously is exciting news to any speciality coffee roaster as there are many different microlots to discover. With the boom in speciality coffee over the last decade, government or privately funded programs are incentivising Colombian coffee farmers to produce higher quality coffee rather than higher yielding commercial grade coffee. Colombian coffee as you would expect with the amount of smallholders has an array of flavours and profiles to offer. From the more heavier coffee’s that were traditionally marketed as high quality Colombian coffee in the 50’s through to the more delicate and complex varieties that are more recently coming out of Colombia. A country that has coffee running through its veins is also at the forefront of coffee innovation, with many techniques unique to Colombia producing some fascinating results. Naturally processed Colombian coffee can result in a richer and heavier body than other naturals, with notes of caramel, vanilla and berries that are common. |

Costa Rica| Costa Rica (tags: BrowseMenu, Central America, Country, Origin) : costa-ricaUpdated: Sun 17 May 2020 TITLE: Costa Rica coffee
META: Costa Rica coffee. A wide range of artisan coffees - sent fresh, directly from the roasters. Coffee was the driving force behind much of the infrastructure in Costa Rica in the early 20th Century. With an incredibly rich and biodiverse environment, Costa Rica has been at the forefront of speciality coffee for many years. With an abundance of water, washing the coffee was no problem for the Costa Ricans unlike some other coffee producing countries. Washed coffee’s have historically fetched a higher price as there are less defects and generally was always perceived as a higher quality coffee. This has paved the way for the coffee industry to implement a significant amount of infrastructure far longer than many other producing countries. With an increase in micro mills around 20 years ago, Costa Rican coffee is extremely traceable, right back to the exact farm or lot. That said, it is now possible to highlight flavours from a particular crop that may have otherwise been diluted. Honey processed coffee has also played a huge role in the Costa Rican coffee culture with many farmers adopting this method to produce more interesting coffee’s. Costa Rican coffees have a soft sweetness, light in body and clean in cup. Mild in acidity and often possessing honey or molasses notes. Due to the traceability of many Costa Rican coffees, it is hard to group them all together as some of coffee’s are absurdly different. That said, Costa Rica is always a coffee I look out for on the menu as it pretty much always has some unique gem. |

META: El Salvador coffee. A wide range of artisan coffees - sent fresh, directly from the roasters. Home of the famous Pacamara varietal, El Salvador has been an important player in the coffee producing World for many years. After the civil war of the 1980’s El Salvador have been progressive in the speciality coffee industry, while many other countries replaced unique speciality coffee trees for high-yield crops, El Salvador did not go through this process. In turn, although El Salvador does not produce anywhere near the quantity of coffee as other Central American countries it does produce undeniable quality and unusual characteristics. An El Salvadorian coffee doesn’t have the punchy flavours and acidity of a Guatemalan however the subtle fruitiness and the gentle fragrance make coffee from this region of the world a perfect everyday coffee. |

Some of the best coffee’s in the world have been grown in this country, the various heirloom varieties that are only found in Ethiopia make each coffee even more special and unique. Flavours often provide a sweet chocolate... Fiery volcanoes, huge lakes, huge lakes with fiery volcanoes. Guatemala has an iconic postcard worthy landscape that attracts folk from all over the world. It just so happens that the very things that make Guatemala so unique, the volcanoes also play a huge role in providing rich and nutrient land for coffee to grow. Coffee has been growing in Guatemala since the 1850’s and was always one of main exports for the Guatemalan economy. Right up until the early twenty first century coffee was one of the main economic players in Guatemala. Unfortunately since the coffee crisis in 2001 and many farmers now choosing to farm other more profitable crops, coffee has been on the decline. One of the great things about coffee production in Guatemala is the fact that many of the farms have their own wet stations so they are able to process their own coffee meaning that many of the coffees leaving the country are traceable right back to the farm. Guatemalan coffee’s are highly regarded in the speciality coffee world because of the range of different flavours that can be found. The taste profiles can span all the way from light floral or citrus tones all the way through to deeper full bodied chocolatey notes. The naturals are particularly interesting because Guatemala is normally associated with washed coffees, but naturally processed coffees have recently taken off. With the infrastructure and education that already existed in the Guatemalan coffee industry it's easy to see why they have recently produced some high quality naturals. |

Sean soon teamed up with James as his previous role as a buyer and taster with Lincoln and York had set him firmly on the path of coffee love. As well as searching out and roasting beautiful coffee gems for coffee shops and customers, these guys have a vision of their roastery as a place where people can come and be inspired by the journey coffee takes from field to cup. Regular cupping events, barista throw-downs and training days all contribute to building a fabulous, integrated coffee community. In August 2018, after running out of space in their previous home as part of a community of creatives in Greengate, the company moved to a spacious and beautiful old workshop in Newton Heath replete with wooden beams. They’ve since built a training room to help their customers understand what Heart & Graft do and thus in turn how to make better coffee for their customers! |

As a relatively late comer to the coffee industry, Honduras has become the largest producer of coffee in Central America and now produces some of the highest quality coffee in the Americas. The location and terroir are perfect for growing coffee which is the country's second biggest export. Over 100,000 families are involved in the production of coffee and with the investment in infrastructure and education into processing techniques from the government the coffee industry is booming. However the infamous leaf rust hit Honduras fairly hard in 2012 with many crops badly damaged, while the large amounts of rainfall is also quite a big problem when drying the coffee. Taste profiles of Honduran coffee are fairly similar to Guatemalan coffees in that they offer a wide range of flavours. From the Northern forested region of Agalta producing darker nutty and caramel flavours through to the Montecillos region which is famed for more citric flavours and juicy acidity. |

I always find it very difficult to opt for anything other than a Kenyan when I see it on filter in a cafe. The unique and extraordinary flavours that certain Kenyan coffees hold is remarkable. Mexican coffee is fairly unheard of on this side of the Atlantic with the majority of the coffee heading North to the USA. It also doesn’t produce a great deal of speciality grade coffee with most of the coffee leaving the country sold as commodity coffee. This however may change in years to come as Mexico has a huge amount of land that is perfect for growing high grade speciality coffee as well as a large work force of well established coffee growing professionals. Watch this space! With a fairly high traceability, Mexican coffee can have a broad range of flavours. That said, a typical Mexican coffee is delicate and light in body. It doesn’t usually possess the bold fruit notes to that of its Southern neighbours but instead can have a sweeter, chocolate flavour profile. |

META: Choose from our range of natural processed coffees, picked from artisan roasters in the UK. The natural (dry, unwashed) process is one of the oldest methods of producing coffee. It involves drying the whole cherry, in the sun, on tables or in thin layers on patios. The cherries are raked or turned by hand to prevent mildew during the drying process, which can take up to 4 weeks. Once the cherries have been dried to the correct amount, the pulp is removed with a hulling machine before the coffee beans are packed. The coffee from natural processed beans can tend to have more body and complexity with less acidity than with the 'washed' or wet process. |

META: Looking for the best Nicaraguan coffee? Bordering Costa Rica and Honduras, Nicaraguan coffee offers a smooth to medium body with a mild acidity, floral sensations and nutty, vanilla notes. To make ... The coffee industry in Nicaragua has had a pretty turbulent history. Affected by war, the economy, import bans and hurricanes just to name a few the coffee industry has been through a lot. However over the last 15 years coffee production is starting to make a comeback and is firmly on it’s way to becoming as popular as it was in the 19th century. With the turn around in the coffee industries quantity of coffee produced so did the quality of coffee, with more investment in infrastructure, the processing and the traceability are improving. Much of the coffee produced in Nicaragua is shade grown (grown under the canopy of trees), this is fantastic for the environment but can also produce some unique tasting coffees. This is no more apparent than in the rich lands of the Nueva Segovia region of Nicaragua is home to a few small holder farmers who are pushing the boundaries of processing coffee and have in recent years put the region on the map by excelling on the cupping table. As one of the larger Central American countries it would be fair to think that Nicaraguan coffee was even more diverse than its smaller neighbouring countries, however this is not the case. Although there are obviously exceptions, Nicaragua typically produces coffees with lighter, fruitier bodies and crisp acidity. |

META: Panama coffee. A wide range of artisan coffees - sent fresh, directly from the roasters. One of the most interesting and influential coffee growing countries in the speciality coffee industry. Historically, Panama had a very poor reputation for producing coffee and in comparison to its neighbours on either side, Costa Rica and Colombia produced miniscule amounts. In recent years however, Panama has produced some of the most unique and expensive coffee in the world. Panama, although a relatively small country is extremely bio-diverse and has a number of micro-climates at altitude which contribute to a perfect coffee growing environment. The stable economy and the infrastructure in Panama enabled a few coffee farms in the region of Boquette to pioneer the Gesha coffee plant which famously sold for extortionate amounts of money, putting Panamanian coffee on the map. Panama as an origin, aside from Gesha does typically produce some other world class coffee’s with similar taste profiles of complex fruit and floral notes. vimeo_id: 411356616;

META: Papua New Guinea coffee. A wide range of artisan coffees - sent fresh, directly from the roasters. An origin that is fairly new to the scene but poses an exciting future in the industry. Papa New Guinea produces a modest amount of coffee in comparison to other countries but is a huge industry for the country with around 2.5 million people working in coffee which is half of the population. As a country a few barriers are going to have to be overcome before they really start to be a common origin on the shelves of speciality coffee shops. 95% of the coffee produced in Papua New Guinea is done so by small holders, although it hopefully will be come a positive in years to come because of the uniqueness of microlot coffee it currently is a problem as farmers don’t have that appropriate machinery to process the coffee so are forced to sell to large washing stations who mix the coffee. Coffee from Papua New Guinea has complex taste profiles. The uniqueness of the coffee industry in Papua New Guinea lends itself to the flavours of the coffee it produces, while clean they have a buttery sweetness and often floral notes that evolve into juicy fruits. |

Peru| Peruvian (tags: BrowseMenu, Country, Origin, South America) : peruUpdated: Fri 08 May 2020 TITLE: Peruvian coffee
META: Peruvian coffee. A wide range of artisan coffees - sent fresh, directly from the roasters. A country blessed with epic landscapes, mysterious history and many different cultures, Peru has an enormous amount of places to be explored. It is also one of the largest coffee producing countries in the world. As in many Latin American countries Peru has experienced a fairly turbulent past and the coffee industry has at times suffered because of the countries circumstance. In the 70’s when the government pulled out their support of the industry, coffee production sank, with very little infrastructure existing. Although Peruvian coffee production has now fully recovered from the lows of the 70’s, infrastructure still remains a problem in certain areas of the country, in particular logistics. Some farms have to transport unprocessed coffee to mills that are situated much further away than typically desired. With the tourism industry booming and Peruvian cuisine amongst the most talked about in the world, more speciality coffee is staying put in Peru. The progressive nature of the country is also leading to pioneering coffee farming and processing, biodynamic coffee is one of a few techniques that the Peruvian coffee industry is now using. Taste profiles of Peruvain coffee are normally light in body with mild acidity, they can be flavourful and aromatic but don’t hold the complexity that some other origins in the Americas can possess. The northern region of Cajamarca has recently produced some exciting coffees, with its desirable geography and terroir the coffees have balanced acidity with a pleasant sweetness. |

META: Coffee from Tanzania. A wide range of artisan coffees - sent fresh, directly from the roasters. The history of Tanzanian coffee dates back to the 16th century, when Robusta coffee would have been imported from Ethiopia. Coffee was initially chewed like tobacco after it was boiled and smoked. Nowadays over 90% of the coffee that is produced in Tanzania is grown by smallholder coffee farmers that use a cooperative washing station, however some of the best traceable coffees come from estates that have their own processing facilities. Tanzanian coffee can differ fairly radically depending on where the coffee was grown. A coffee originating from the Kilimanjaro region can exhibit floral and subtle complexities that are not dissimilar to a washed Ethiopian. While a coffee grown in the Mbeya region can possess a more full bodied richer flavour. |

Natural Process| Natural process coffee (tags: BrowseMenu, Group, Process) : natural-processUpdated: Sat 06 Jun 2020 TITLE: Natural Process coffee

The mucilage is then washed from the bean once its aroma has been absorbed. |

El Salvador| El Salvador (tags: BrowseMenu, Central America, Country, Origin) : el-salvadorUpdated: Sun 17 May 2020 TITLE: El Salvador coffee

Ethiopia| Ethiopian (tags: Africa, BrowseMenu, Country, Origin) : ethiopiaUpdated: Sun 17 May 2020 TITLE: Ethiopian coffee
META: Ethiopian coffee. A wide range of artisan coffees - sent fresh, directly from the roasters. The birthplace of coffee, or at least the country that first consumed it. Ethiopia is a country so synonymous with coffee that the word coffee originated from Kaffa, a region in the south west of the country. Coffee is deeply entwined into their culture with over 12 million people working in or around coffee. Some of the best coffee’s in the world have been grown in this country, the various heirloom varieties that are only found in Ethiopia make each coffee even more special and unique. A typical Ethiopian coffee isn’t typical at all, taste profiles can be wildly diverse. From a zesty citrus fruit to a bright floral aftertaste to a fruit-forward watermelon. Some of my favourite ever coffees have been Ethiopian. Their washed coffee’s boast layers of complex notes while their naturals are juicy and outlandish. A true coffee lover's coffee! |

Guatemala| Guatemala (tags: BrowseMenu, Central America, Country, Origin) : guatemalaUpdated: Fri 08 May 2020 TITLE: Guatemala coffee
META: Find great Guatemalan coffee picked from our range of UK artisan roasters. Thanks to it's nutritious volcanic soil Guatemalan coffee is rich and flavourful. |

META: Find amazing Honduran coffee and have it delivered straight from the roaster to your door. Due to its diverse climate and production processes coffee from Honduras offers a diverse selection of fru... |

With a fraction of the coffee history of its Northern neighbour Ethiopia, Kenya excelled in production in the 1950’s and now has some of the most highly educated producers alongside the perfect coffee growing environment. I always find it very difficult to opt for anything other than a Kenyan when I see it on filter in a cafe. The unique and extraordinary flavours that certain Kenyan coffees hold is remarkable. Often bright with layers of complex berries as well as streaks of wine toned acidity wrapped in sweet fruit. Best prepared as a pour over, the cup often evolves as it cools. |

Mexico (tags: BrowseMenu, Central America, Country, Origin) : mexicoUpdated: Fri 08 May 2020 TITLE: Coffee from Mexico
META: Looking for great Mexican Coffee? Choose from our range of Mexican roasted coffees here. Coffee from this area varies by region and variety but typically offers a small to medium body, nutty flavou... |

Nicaragua (tags: BrowseMenu, Central America, Country, Origin) : nicaraguaUpdated: Fri 08 May 2020 TITLE: Coffee from Nicaragua

Panama| Panama (tags: BrowseMenu, Central America, Country, Origin) : panamaUpdated: Sun 17 May 2020 TITLE: Panama coffee
META: Panama coffee. A wide range of artisan coffees - sent fresh, directly from the roasters. One of the most interesting and influential coffee growing countries in the speciality coffee industry. Historically, Panama had a very poor reputation for producing coffee and in comparison to its neighbours on either side, Costa Rica and Colombia produced miniscule amounts. In recent years however, Panama has produced some of the most unique and expensive coffee in the world. Panama, although a relatively small country is extremely bio-diverse and has a number of micro-climates at altitude which contribute to a perfect coffee growing environment. The stable economy and the infrastructure in Panama enabled a few coffee farms in the region of Boquette to pioneer the Gesha coffee plant which famously sold for extortionate amounts of money, putting Panamanian coffee on the map. Panama as an origin, aside from Gesha does typically produce some other world class coffee’s with similar taste profiles of complex fruit and floral notes. vimeo_id: 411356616;

META: Looking for great roasted coffees? Rwandan coffees are some of the most highly rated in Africa. High-altitude and high-quality production help to produce a full-bodied, sweet, syrupy coffee, althou... Known as the land of a thousand hills Rwanda has the perfect environment to grow speciality Arabica coffee. Since the genocide of the 90’s, coffee has played a huge role in getting the country back to where it once was. The introduction of washing stations and the education of younger generations about growing high quality coffee has been a symbol of positivity in Rwanda. Rwanda has a slightly different flavour profile to that of an Ethiopian or Kenyan. What it lacks in bright citrus notes it makes up for in deeper, more concentrated fruit flavours. Often reminiscent of stewed apples it can have a syrupy more heavy mouthfeel. Rwandan coffee is also highly diverse in flavour, it also produces a small amount of speciality Robusta coffee. |

Tanzania (tags: Africa, BrowseMenu, Country, Origin) : tanzaniaUpdated: Fri 08 May 2020 TITLE: Coffee from Tanzania
